Two attempts at hosting a track meet, and both have been postponed due to inclement weather for the Tigers. But there were still a number of highlights this week in Adel.

Boys Soccer (2-0)

Two games into the season — two big wins already for the Tigers.

First on March 28, ADM opened the new campaign with a 2-1 win over North Polk to start on solid ground in the Raccoon River Conference. It’s typically been a tight contest with the Comets, with each of the past three years being decided by one goal. That makes seven straight wins over North Polk, this time requiring two second half points to get the edge.

ADM's Peyton Meier moves the ball down the field on Monday, April 1, 2024, at Dewey Field in Perry.

For the entire first half, the Tiger were held without a shot on goal. And ADM’s defense managed to allow just four shots as well, with only one hitting the net. So in a defensive battle, it was on Peyton Meier’s golden foot to come through. Only getting off two shots, Meier connected both times to start his season a perfect 2-for-2.

Meier’s heroics stretched into Monday with the Tigers staying on the road to take on 2023 state qualifier Perry.

With a tied game 1-1 after both teams scored in the first period, Meier broke the stalemate in extra time, leaving the game as the team’s only scorer so far this season after he made one shot and a penalty kick. Rhylan Stine-Smith was in with the assist. Meanwhile, the defense was propelled by goalie Owen Evans blocking 10 of Perry’s shots.

Girls Soccer (0-2)

After starting the season with a 4-0 loss to Norwalk, the Tigers hosted North Polk on March 28. The Comets left with a 4-2 mark. But with two goals going through, the Tigers marked a high score against a program that hasn’t missed the state tournament since 2013.

Helping get those two goals for the Tigers, Jada Grove connected on one shot while assisting Brenna Seidl on another. And keeping the Comets’ score down, new goalie Alayna Freeman saved 16 shot attempts.

Boys Track

If the football season wasn’t enough proof, the Tigers have an elite set of sprinters in Brevin Doll and Aiden Flora. Doll won the Earlham 100-meter dash at 10.95 seconds while Flora booked gold in Winterset at 11.06 seconds. Doll also won the 200-meter dash at 22.52 seconds. Both of his time were better than his pre-football-injury times from his junior year.

Girls Track

The Tiger girls dominated Earlham on March 28, leaving the Cardinals’ track with nine event wins in tow.

Perhaps the biggest win of the bunch, shot-putter Kennedy Stanford tossed a personal record 36-foot-10 ¼ for first place. Not only was that over seven feet more than second place, but more than three feet above her best mark last season.

Extending beyond solo wins, the Tigers had a true team effort after getting wins in the 4x100 shuttle hurdle, 4x200, 4x400, sprint medley and 4x800 sprint medley relays. The 4x100 meter team took silver.
